In 2013, ten years after his death, the Tibor Varga International Violin Competition took place from 22 August to 29 August.

Chaired by Enzo Restagno, the panel of judges was made up of Natalia Gutman, Augustin Dumay, Guo Wenjing, Pavel Vernikov, Milan Vitek and Dong-Suk Kang, all of whom enjoy international fame.

The 24 shortlisted candidates selected by the pre-selection jury met in Sion for the three qualifiying rounds, including one of chamber music and a concert given by the three finalists.

The three violinists, accompanied by the Lausanne chamber Orchestra and conducted by Jesús López Cobos, all performed a piece specially written by the Chinese composer Guo Wenjing, before playing a concerto of their own choice to the large audience present at the Grand Finale, held in the air base in Sion. This concert was recorded by the Radio Suisse Romande Espace 2.

The three very promising young prize winners (Sunao Goko, Liya Petrova et Eimi Wakui) have joined the long list of violinists of international renown who have been successful in Sion since 1967, notably Jean-Jacques Kantorow, Boris Kuschnir Vadim Repin in the Tibor Varga television competition and Paul Huang and Marianna Vasileva in the Sion Valais competition.

The next competition will take place from 19 August to 26 August 2015. Online registration is open.
