COMPETITION BACKGROUND

Dedicated to the continuation of the achievements initiated and developed by Tibor Varga, two international violin competitions were held for many years in Valais, initially in parallel and later alternately.

In March 2011 a decisive step forward was taken, with the signing of a convention laying out the conditions for the unification of these two events within one competition. This new competition, aptly named the 'Tibor Varga International Violin Competition Sion-Valais', is placed under the responsibility of the Fondation de l'Académie de Musique Tibor Varga (AMTV)
Tibor Varga settled in Valais in 1958, but his international career led him to spend much more time abroad than in the Sion area.

After a few years however, he decided to share his musical and teaching activities with the Valais and founded the Sion Academy of Music in 1963, the Tibor Varga Festival in 1964 and the Tibor Varga Violin Competition in 1967. These institutions rapidly developed and gained international favour around their well-known founder. In 1976 the Violin Competition joined the World Federation of International Music Competitions. Over forty years, the Tibor Varga Violin Competition hosted an impressive number of promising young laureates, some of whom went on to become internationally known violinists, such as Jean-Jacques Kantorow, Boris Kuschnir and Vadim Repin.

In 2002, the International Violin Competition Sion Valais was founded, presided over by Shlomo Mintz. Many highly promising laureates won prizes in Sion, among whom Paul Huang and Marianna Vasileva.

For many years, both international competitions ran first in parallel and then alternately, before merging to become the Tibor Varga International Violin Competition Sion Valais, whose first edition will take place in 2013, from 22nd to 29th August, in Sion.
